Do You Remember: The Pink Cinderella Castle Cake?

A couple of weeks ago, I asked what people thought of the "Magic Wand" over Spaceship Earth.
The response was split pretty evenly. But a lot of people brought up the Pink Castle Cake as perhaps the biggest abomination to ever befall Walt Disney World.

  Photo from Wikipedia.
My photos from my trip in 1996 are MIA!

I was there on October 1st, 1996, the 25th anniversary of Walt Disney World Resort, which is why Cinderella Castle was transformed into an 18-story "birthday cake." Besides the pink icing, there were 26 candles, gumballs, lifesavers, etc.
I wasn't a fan, but at least it wasn't my 1st time at the park. If this was my once in a lifetime vacation to Walt Disney World, and I was excited to see the castle in it's original state, and I saw this, I might ask for a refund of some sort.

What was your opinion of the Castle Cake?

  1. I was there, and this whimsical, extremely creative presentation was awesome! I know many people who consider themselves Disney "purists" hated it.....well....I have been a Disney fan since birth, (and I am old!)....so, purist I am...but this was a true work of art. The size and magnitude of this project has to be appreciated! Just remember Stitch......the Cake castle is far less offensive!

  2. I thought the cake was really cute, and as it was temporary I don't know why it was so offensive.
As an aside, our daughter was married at Disney's wedding pavilion in 2008 and on our tour I was admiring the beautiful stained glass window of the castle behind the alter. Turns out it was installed because of the cake castle. Seems brides didn't want the cake in their wedding pictures, and that window was placed to frame the castle in the background.

  4. In 1996 I was 5. I have regularly gone to Disney since birth so I can understand how a first timer would be angry with the Birthday Cake Castle. As a 5 year old, and for many other children, it was AMAZING! I remember my parents not being huge fans but understanding it and thinking my amazement of it to be cute. I talked about it nonstop and when I went back and the castle had been turned back to it's original state, I was actually very sad. I am now 21 and every time I see a picture of the birthday cake castle I cant help but smile. Such fond memories of my childhood. Although, now that I am older. Nothing beats the original Cinderella Castle.

    1. Thank you for your perspective! As an adult, I never thought about it through a child's eyes, and how it would be perceived.
