Princess Half Marathon Weekend at Walt Disney World; Part: 2
By Nick
Part 2 : Friday, February 19th
I woke up early and hopped a bus for Disney's Animal Kingdom for opening and headed right to Kilimanjaro Safaris.
Well, technically, the first thing I did was stop for photos at every PhotoPass Cast Member I came across. As an Annual Passholder, this service is now included in the price, and well, if you are a fan of this blog, you already know I love getting my picture taken, so I will be taking advantage of this for sure! As an extra awesome bonus, the photos are available on the My Disney Experience App pretty quickly!
After my safari, I contacted my friends and family, who told me they were on their way. I headed to the front of the park to meet them, stopping for coffee and chocolate pastry at Kusafiri Coffee Shop and Bakery. I have found that my old favorite, the chocolate croissants, are not as readily available as they used to be, this, it turns out, is better!
After meeting up with my gang, and getting a group photo, they all used their FastPasses for Expedition Everest and I went over to The Boneyard in Dinoland to meet long time friend and one of the earliest readers of this very blog, The Disney Freak herself, Molly!
We all met back up to have lunch at Yak & Yeti Local Food Cafe and then back Dinoland to ride Dinosaur followed by a walk through the Maharajah Jungle Trek before getting a frosty adult beverage at the Wanjohi Refreshment stand located in Harambe Market.
After riding Kilimanjaro Safaris, I left for the Animal Kingdom Lodge to hop a bus over to the Health and Fitness Expo at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex to meet up with my Disney Exchange Podcast co-hosts Lisa and Dave, as well as their spouses and to pick up my Enchanted 10K race packet and shirt.
A little while later I met up with Jill, Zach, Amber and Ryan and we went into downtown Orlando to try the newly opened Wahlburgers. This will forever be know as The Wahlburgers Incident to me, and a full account of it can be found here.
I got back to the room around 9:45pm, and luckily fell asleep very quickly as the following day's activities would be getting underway at 3am!

The Disney Exchange Podcast, Episode 43 ; Enjoying Walt Disney World With a Non Disney Lover
By Nick
Podcast: Play in new window | Download
The Disney Exchange is David Hodges, Lisa Green, and me, Nicholas Maglio.
We jump right into the hot topic of the week, Walt Disney World and Disneyland's Annual Pass price increases and discuss the different tiers, as well as changes, such as the addition of PhotoPass downloads. We discuss strategies to make the most of these changes.
Lisa is making soup and Dave turns a frown upside down.
Main topic; How to entice a non Disney person to go to Walt Disney World. We discuss options to get people that are "Disney Neutral" or maybe even anti Disney people to enjoy a trip to a Disney park.
Food. Alcohol. Those are things that bring people together. Or spa treatments, according to Lisa.
Our legal team really earns the outrageous fees we pay them on this show.
Math. Not our thing.
I know a lot about golf, and prove it.
We all agree; there is something for EVERYONE at Walt Disney World, and anyone can have a good time.
Wheel of Distiny: Favorite view at Walt Disney World.

Planning for the 2014 Epcot International Food and Wine Festival
By Nick
The dates for the 2014 Epcot International Food and Wine Festival this year are September 19th- November 10th.
I usually check out what the Disney Parks Blog, the Disney Food Blog, the Food Festival Blog, and The Tips From the Disney Divas and Devos, where I am a contributing writer, have posted for the latest information and tips for planning.
There are several tastings, seminars, and special events, many of which require reservations. The phone lines to book these experiences opened for Annual Passholders, DVC Members and Golden Oak residents on Friday July 25th.
Chase Disney Visa card holders can start booking tomorrow, July 29th, at 7am.
Booking for the general public starts 7am July 31st, so check ahead as to what you would like to attend, and be prepared! Premium events may be reserved by phone at 407-WDW-FEST (407-939-3378).
This year, our Food and Wine visit time will be very short, so planning will be extra important. We are only going to be in Walt Disney World one day before going on a 4 day cruise on the Dream, and then we are staying one evening when we return from the cruise.
But on a year when we visit for a week, my plan of attack goes like this:
First I check out park hours during my visit. I'm a morning person, so the plan is to go to one of the other parks with early Extra Magic Hours, have lunch at that park, and take an afternoon break. We'll then visit Epcot during the evening. If possible, we avoid the weekends. That's when a lot of locals go and it gets VERY crowded.
On 2 days, usually Friday and whichever day Epcot has early EMHs, we'll hit the food booths early, and visit another park in the evening.
Also, as soon as the menus come out for the booths, we'll go through it and decide what interests us.
I make a copy of this paired down list, and pair it down even further by highlighting the must haves.
Pacing yourself is key, for a variety of reasons, which is why I pick those must haves.
Financially, this is an expensive event if you plan to try a bit of everything. Sure, on the surface, $3-$7 for a sample may not seem like much, but this adds up quickly!
As for paying at the booths, we get gift cards. It's quicker than cash, and an easier way to keep track of what you are spending. Barbie has very generous family members who usually give us gift cards for birthdays and holidays, and we save them for this event.
Then there is the alcohol, which can add up even faster than the food.
I have tried the suggested food and wine pairings in years past, and then had a beer or 2, and then a mixed drink. This is a bad idea. Trust me!
I hope you enjoy the Epcot International Food and Wine Festival as much as we do every year!

Epcot's International Food and Wine Festival Beer Pairing
By: Nick
2014 Epcot Food and Wine Festival Culinary Demonstrations and Beverage Seminars can be booked by Annual Pass, DVC, and Residents of Golden Oak starting today! Visa Card Holders can start booking on July 29th, and the general public on July 31st.
Let's take a look at an event I attended last year.
I have 2 hobbies. Disney and beer. I don’t mean any beer, I mean really good, craft beer. So when planning our trip to Walt Disney World last year, and, more specifically scoping out the beer selection at Epcot’s International Food and Wine Festival, I was very happy to see that there would be a Food and Beer pairing at Italy during my visit.
These events will be held every Tuesday during the festival at Via Napoli, located in the back of the Italy Pavilion in World Showcase from 1:30 pm-3:30 pm.
When I did did it, the experience was from 1:30-4pm.
Another change from last year is the price. It has now gone from $55 to $76!
Let's take a look at my review from last year's event, which I originally posted on the Tips From the Disney Divas and Devos Blog, where I am a contributing writer.
I attended the tasting on 10/1/13 with my friend Tom.We arrived at about 1:15 and checked in at the podium, where we were asked if we had any food allergies. I said I was allergic to shellfish, and this was noted next to my name. We were told they would be calling us all at 1:30 pm, so, while we waited, we had a beer to “prime the pump,” so to speak, at Tutto Gusto, located next door, where they have a small, but wonderful selection of craft beer.
Tip: The beer at Tutto Gusto is expensive, and you want to enjoy what you order, so ask for a sample first, they are more than happy to give you one, and also ask for a description of what you are drinking.
But back to the event! We waited in the courtyard until exactly 1:30 pm, when we were all called by name by the manager, Gabriele, and brought in one group at a time and escorted to our table in the main dining room.
Gabriele gave us a short introduction to our beer expert, Jacquelyn, and explained that this event is usually held in the glassed in area off the courtyard, but it is being refurbished, and we were told behind schedule, as it was supposed to be completed in time for this event.
The table setting :
The menu for our event: Note: The event menu changes each week! I found a site that has these menus, but of course, these are subject to change.
We were at a table for six, with 3 seats one side, and 3 booth seats. I wound up in the middle booth seat.
Tip: Avoid a middle booth seat if possible! I’m not sure if it
was because the angle was awkward for the servers to pour, but I seemed
to get a short pour each time. They were fairly good about quick refills
upon request, but they were busy, and I was often empty.
The first beer served was the Nuova Mattina from Birrificio del Ducato, a Saison Farmhouse style ale, which was paired with Minestra Maritata (Minestrone soup).
Jacquelyn came around to each table and explained the characteristics of the beer, how to taste the beer properly, where it was made, and how and why it paired with each food.
I’m going to be honest. I read Draft Magazine, a magazine for “beer enthusiasts” but I am by no means a beer connoisseur, just as I don’t consider myself a foodie, but I know what I like, and Saisons are one of my favorite beer styles. It paired wonderfully with the soup.
The second beer was My Antonia from Birra del Borgo, an Imperial Pilsner, which was served with the Pizza Margherita con mozzarella bufala (Margherita Pizza with Buffalo cheese).
This was very hoppy beer, which paired with the sweetness of the
tomato sauce. I am not a big hops fan however, so this was my least
favorite of the 4.
Next up was the PVK from Birrificio L’Olmaia, a wheat beer. I’m a wheat beer fan, and this was my favorite of the group.
Before the dish was served, Gabriele came to our table and told me
that because the next course contained clams, that I would be served a
veal cutlet. I said that would be fine. To be honest, I am not allergic
to clams, but as I felt they had gone out of their way to accommodate
me, I went with it.
The table was served the Pesce allo Tiano (all’Acqua Pazza), which I was told was very good, and paired well with the beer.
My veal was terrific. I really wasn’t concerned by what paired with what at this point, as I was feeling pretty good!
As I said, I’m a wheat beer fan, and I hope to find PVK at a local beer store!
We finished strong with my second favorite beer, Runa Bianca by Birrificio Montegioco, a Witbier, and
a really delicious dessert, Mele Fritte (Bigne di Mele al Rum) (fried
apples with rum). Since I’m no expert, I really can’t tell the nuances
between a witbier and a wheat beer. This was a little sweeter than the PVK, and was excellent with the apples.
It was now time to say goodbye, and the head chef, Charlie, came around to each table to ask how everything was.
Gabriele thanked us all for coming, and asked us to applaud the staff that made this event memorable.
So, is this event worth the $55+ tax price tag? Tom and I
absolutely think so. If you enjoy good beer and good food, this is a
total winner. It’s also one of the more reasonably priced of all the
special Food and Wine events.
If you are not a beer lover, then you probably wouldn’t be interested in this event. I say probably as opposed to definitely
because at our table there was a couple where the wife didn’t like
beer, and her husband drank her pours. I actually thought this was a
good idea at the beginning of the meal, and regretted not bringing my
wife along. But by the end, I couldn’t imagine drinking THAT much. I’m
in no way judging the other person, they could clearly handle their
alcohol better than me, but I would say you’d be better off not
attending this event unless you like beer.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So, now that the price is $76, is it still worth the price? I honestly don't think I would attend again, but if it is a first visit to this event, and you are a beer lover, I would likely still go. It is a really wonderful experience.

Early Signups for Princess Half Marathon Weekend
By Laurie Olivieri
Wednesday July 9, 2014 is early signups for Princess Half Marathon Weekend for DVC members and current Annual Pass members. The weekend is February 19 - 22nd 2015!
If you plan to sign up for the Princess 5k, the Enchanted 10k and the Half Marathon or the Glass Slipper Challenge (the 10k & 1/2), be ready to go!
You will need to sign into your account and follow the links provided by rundisney.
While you don't need an active.com account, I run several races so I enjoy my information prefilled. You will also need a credit card to sign up!
My first PHM race was the 1/2 marathon in 2013!
I was scared as this was also my first 1/2 marathon! I thoroughly enjoyed it and especially enjoyed the course. There is nothing quite like running through the Magic Kingdom Toll Plaza and The Castle!
Brings tears to my eyes every time. The trumpeters play loudly while the runners run through the back of The Castle!
There were lots of characters along the route. I was honestly too afraid to stop until I knew i would definitely beat the 16 minute per mile pace that is set by rundisney. I stopped for a fun picture with the green Armyman.
He tried to get me to do pushups..I told him I am 51 years old - I probably won't get up. This is right around mile 10 or so!
For 2014, rundisney introduced the Enchanted 10k - making a Glass Slipper Challenge. This means to run both the 10k and the Half Marathon.
You must sign up specifically for this challenge. By doing so, you get three medals - 10K, 1/2 marathon and the challenge one. I had also signed up for the 5k - so I got 4 medals for the weekend!
Rundisney does a great job with the races and all 25,000 people running with you become your best friends during the race! If you enjoy running/walking, setting physical challenges for yourself and love Disney...I would recommend signing up!

Disneyland Passes
By D'land Diva
Well, another year of being an annual pass holder at Disneyland has passed and what should happen? They raise the prices of annual passes AGAIN. Now, I'm not talking a few bucks here, like they do for the other admission tickets. Nope. Annual passes, all of them, go up between $20-$30 each year. Parking, which must be added onto every pass except the premium pass has also increased by that amount. This year, the powers that be also decided to do away with the favorite Southern California pass that allowed Disney lovers to attend the parks on weekends (the other So Cal pass blocks out holiday times and weekends, and the Deluxe and Premium passes are significantly more money and not as popular).
Should I renew? Do I just keep agreeing to pay the increase in prices because in the end it is worth it to me?
Let me start at the beginning.
I bought my first Disneyland Annual Pass in the year 1999.
There was A PASS at that time. I paid less than $200 for the pass (I don't remember the exact price, but it was higher than $150 and less than $200). Daily ticket prices were around $35. People were complaining about the expenses then!
Over the years the cost and complexity of the annual passes at Disneyland have changed. There became two pass options, then four. The lowest price pass started somewhere in the $100 range and severely limited attendance days (no holidays or weekends) and the highest price pass had no blackout days and free parking. I have always opted for the highest priced pass or the next highest price pass. I was a teacher for many years, and weekends and holidays were when I could go to the park so the other passes did me no good!
So I have been an annual pass holder at Disneyland for fifteen years. Disneyland is my go to place. It holds so many memories for me and my family- from some of my first dates with my husband, to the intense morning sickness I had with my son and sitting on Main Street moaning, to waddling into California Adventure nine months pregnant with my daughter trying desperately to be one of the first people to ride the new Little Mermaid Attraction. For goodness sakes, my husband proposed to me at Disneyland. It's like an old friend, I don't know if I could live without it! Over the years, we have kind of looked at our annual passes as a necessary expense- like car insurance.
But...this year my youngest has reached the age where we need to buy a pass for her. With the increases in price for the passes, each member of our family would pay $700 for this year's pass. That is $2,800 for our family to have passes. Sure, we could go down to the cheaper pass, but my husband is a teacher and we need the extra weekend days to visit. We would be able to visit the parks on Sundays, but not Saturdays. Christmas vacation would essentially be blocked out, as would much of Thanksgiving break. Now that the other pass has been done away with, the only other option for us would be the lowest price pass which is a weekday only pass. With two little ones in school, it's not reasonable and we wouldn't use it all that much.
I truly do understand where Disney is coming from with this one, too. There are a million plus annual pass holders. Park attendance is...sometimes downright miserable. We have learned to get to the parks early in the morning on Saturdays, when most of the passes are blocked out in order to get on a decent number of rides without having to wait an hour for something like Autopia. From Disney's point of view, visitors to the parks are getting the raw end of the deal- and when it comes down to it, the visitors are where the parks make the most money. If I were taking my vacation and had to wait two hours to ride on Splash Mountain and another hour to ride Dumbo and an hour and a half to ride on Star Tours due to annual pass holders, I might be a little bitter. But, is raising the prices really the way to go here? Clearly the price increases in the past didn't lower attendance. Maybe getting rid of the So Cal pass will help? I think the better option to reduce the number of pass holders would be eliminate the monthly payment plans for passes. It is a drastic approach for sure, but I believe it would get the job done.
But I digress...
Sure, it's a first world problem, the cost of a Disneyland annual pass. But I suspect in the end, my family will once again cave and maybe eat top ramen dinners once a week to pay for our passes. The 60th anniversary of Disneyland is coming up in 2015. We cannot miss it!
