Bay Lake Tower Resort

RM-Bay-Lake-Tower-Building-View

By Lisa Green

We have always loved Disney’s Contemporary Resort.  More than the design and theme, which we like well enough (especially the Mary Blair mural in the Grand Canyon Concourse).  We are crazy in love with the location – to us, the ability to walk to the Magic Kingdom just can’t be beat.  And the restaurants – we love those too.  And the monorail whooshing right on into the building.  Well, you get the idea.  We always knew if a DVC resort became available by the Contemporary, we’d be all in.  That’s why Bay Lake Tower is our home away from home.

One of the most important aspects of the Disney Vacation Club for our family, is the ability to use your points how, when and where you like (based on availability).  When we needed a place to sleep six, Bay Lake Tower’s two bedroom lock-off option was perfect for us – master bedroom (king bed) and bath, full kitchen with living room (pull-out queen sofa and chair-and-a-half) and a connecting studio (two double beds).  When Raymond and I travel alone, we just need a studio.  Able to book at our home resort 11 months in advance, we were, for our most recent visit, able to book a lake view studio (339 square feet) which was perfect in every way!

Arriving from the airport via Disney’s Magical Express, check-in is in the Contemporary lobby (we opted not to check-in online to see how the in-person version works).  Greeted immediately upon stepping down from the bus by a very friendly and efficient Cast Member, we were promptly escorted into the lobby and handed off to the helpful young man at the check-in counter.  The process was quick and easy and we were told our room was ready. We got our room number and informational materials and headed off for the short walk to Bay Lake Tower.  There is now a new check-in counter in the Bay Lake Tower lobby, but it is not for guests arriving via Magical Express.

We were a tiny bit disappointed to find out our room was on the 3rd floor.  The 5th floor is super convenient to the walkway between Bay Lake Tower and the Contemporary.  The higher floors seem to have the best views.  We were surprisingly happy exactly where we were!  Our balcony overlooked Bay Lake and the grounds of the Contemporary and – as a bonus – was a perfect viewing area for the Electrical Walter Pageant on the evenings we found ourselves back in our room in time to enjoy it.

Our room had a queen bed, sofa, table and chairs, television, dresser, kitchenette, and bathroom.  The tiny kitchenette makes amazing use of a small space!  In the far left corner of the kitchen area is a little extra vanity with shelves, mirror and outlets.

I was able to shower first then move into the kitchenette to apply makeup, style my hair, etc.  The kitchen also boasts an incredible amount of storage – including a very cool pull-out shelving unit.  We utilized the coffee maker for brewing the delicious Joffrey’s Coffee we picked up in the Animal Kingdom Lodge gift shop on our first day of vacation.

Location, view, comfort, amenities – our Bay Lake Tower studio did not disappoint.

The Disney Exchange Podcast, Episode 41 ; Aulani with Special Guest Dave Tupper

By: Nick
Photos: Dave Tupper

Podcast: Play in new window | Download

The Disney Exchange is David Hodges, Lisa Green, and me, Nicholas Maglio.
This week we are joined by special guest Dave Tupper to discuss Aulani, a Disney Resort and Spa!

If you are not familiar, Aulani is a DVC (Disney Vacation Club) resort located in Ko Olina, Hawaii on the island of Oahu.

Dave tells us about Disney and Menehune magic which can be found all over the resort, and that you should not miss the Starlit Hui, which is like a luau, with hula dancing and Hawaiian music.

Parking and Disney's way of limiting locals access to amenities which would lead to overcrowding is discussed.

We talk about the check in process and how smooth it is and the Disney magic to be found in the lobby.

We break into our favorite topic, eating, and Dave tells us about the dining options found in Aulani, including the character breakfast.

Dave goes on to tell us about Aunty's Beach House, the kids club.

Aulani gets top notch Hawaiian musicians in to entertain guests.

Are you like me, and don't want to go in the ocean because that's where the sharks live?
There are plenty of fantastic swimming / hot tub options at the resort that don't bring you in contact with aquatic critters.

The Wheel of Distiny: Favorite Disney attraction music.

Thank you for listening to The Disney Exchange Podcast, and thank you very much for joining us Dave Tupper!

Walt Disney World's 20th Anniversary Press Kit

By: Nick

I don't know where I got this Walt Disney World 20th Anniversary Press Kit. I also don't remember what I paid for it.
What I do know is, it's a fascinating look at a very exciting time in Walt Disney World history.

Let's turn the handle and see what pops up.

Roger Rabbit! A character now sadly absent at Walt Disney World.

Inside is a packet of information, and a small calendar covering park hours for the 3 gates at that time, The Magic Kingdom, Epcot Center, and Disney-MGM Studio from October 1991 to January 1992.

The information included would make anyone interested in Disney park history, drool.
  • An overview of some of the new surprises awaiting guests, such as "Spectromagic" and "Jim Henson's Muppet Vision 3-D".
  • 20 reasons to visit Walt Disney World, such as "Surprise in the Skies" a daytime extravaganza above and around Epcot's World Showcase, and "Sorcery in the Sky", a fireworks display at Disney-MGM Studios.
  • 2 pages of Milestones, Attendance Marks, and Attraction Opening dates.
  • Park statistics and employment info. 33,000 employees at that time!
  • Pricing. A one day ticket? $33. 4 day pass? $111. Annual Pass? $190!
  • Personalities available for interviews, such as Michael Eisner, Frank Wells, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and Roy E. Disney.
  • A list of the celebrities that would be in the "Parade of Stars" in the 20 Year Homecoming Celebration at Disney-MGM Studios. Stars such as, Sally Struthers, Art Linkletter, and Eva Gabor!
  • Golf Course info
  • Information about a new concept in family vacationing called the Disney Vacation Club.

And if that wasn't enough, there is a plethora of 8x10 glossy photographs, with information on the back.

The 20th Anniversary "Surprise" Celebration Parade.

Dinosaurs, I confess, I never ever watched.

Before it was Old Key West, it was the Disney Vacation Club Resort.

Muppets!

I miss Spectromagic!

I had the great fortune to see most of the attractions described and shown here, and I must say, a lot of it is missed. The "Surprise" parade in the Magic Kingdom was amazing, and "Surprise in the Skies" at Epcot was also spectacular. And while I know "Fantasmic" is incredibly popular, I am not a fan of the crowds, and preferred "Sorcery in the Sky" at the Studios.

Also included is a Vacation Guide.

The back cover of the folder.

I hope you enjoyed this trip with me down memory lane.

Throwback Thursday: Walt Disney World-September/October 2008 - Part 1

By Nick

Back before I got on Facebook, which led to blogging, which led to Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest and now Podcasting, my only form of socializing via the internet was a Disney Vacation Club (DVC) forum called Mouseowners and then The DVC News Forums.

I met a lot of wonderful people through these forums, many of whom I am still friends with, and many I wish I had met and never got an opportunity to.

While going through the DVC News Forums WDW Planning and Trip Reports page to find some information for a blog article, it was a real trip back in a time machine to see my posts, and to see friends and acquaintances comments.

I thought I'd attempt to share my reports here. Some are very lengthy, so I'll be breaking them up into multiple parts, as I did when I initially posted them.

I hope you enjoy! I was newjerseynick on the forums by the way, if you were ever on these forums.

We begin with a trip on September 27, 2008 at 1:45 AM!  I couldn't sleep and got a grand total of 3 hours. Our flight left at 710am.

We used Magical Express and got to Pop Century by 10:20am. Our room wasn't ready so we checked our bags, and headed to Animal Kingdom.

We got FPs for Everest, and went to the 11:30am Finding Nemo the Musical.

Rode Everest. Even then, motion sickness made it a once a day event for me. The backwards part is a killer.

We had ADRs at Yak and Yeti for 1:PM, but we showed up about at 12:30, and were promptly seated.

We started off with the pot stickers, which were very tasty. For our entrees, Barbie ordered the Crispy Mahi Mahi, I had 2 appetizers, the Mussels, and the Sesame Ahi Tuna. The mussels were good, but the broth they came in was phenomenal.

After lunch we rode Dinosaur twice, with no wait.
After Dinosaur, we went on Kilimanjaro Safaris. I always enjoy the safari, but on this trip we wound up being held up for about 15 minutes, in an area that had no wildlife, because a pelican was blocking the road and another vehicle up ahead. And it was in the sun. And hot.

After that ride, we decided it was time to head back to Pop and take a swim.

I called ahead on the bus ride back, and our room was ready. We got back to the hotel about 4, and we were put in the 1990s section.

We swam and relaxed till about 6, then headed to the food court for dinner. I had the Fried Chicken Special, and a couple Coronas. I had not discovered "craft beer" at that point.

Barbie had the Greek Salad and OJ.

We were in bed by 9PM, party animals that we are.

Please stop back next Thursday for Part 2!

A Look at Vero Beach, a DVC Resort

By Andrew and Ann Cloud

Editor's Note: Disney Musings would like to thank Andrew and Ann for joining us, and providing us with information and photographs looking at Disney's DVC Vero Beach Resort.-Barbie

The first photo is of a Vero Beach studio with an ocean view and here is our view.

This photo is taken from the balcony of The Green Door.  It's located on the ocean side of the resort.  There is indoor and outdoor seating.  It's our tradition (we have been there twice) to eat there on our first day.

This is a view from the beach of the main building of the resort. This houses the ocean views, the restaurants, front desk and gift shop.

These photos are of the rental area. There are no chairs provided on the beach. People either bring their own and carry them down to the beach or rent from a man who rents wave runners, chairs, chaise lounges, catamarans, umbrellas and beach tents.

Here is a close up of the main building and a photo of the main building from the ocean.

Here is the main building again, from the beach, but more importantly, take notice of the sand wall.  Think if it as a wall of graffiti, but with the carvings in sand. We were there in May 2014 and carved things in the sand. We knew better, but we were was honestly expecting our artwork to still be there when we returned several months later.  Alas, they were gone.

The resort is set up with all these out buildings.  They have no grand villas, but cottages, instead.  The cottages are separate buildings that sit on top of the hill, closest to the beach. The way the resort was described to me was the majority of the standard view rooms were located in off set buildings. When you go on line, the only room you can specify as an ocean view is a studio. That just seems odd to me.

We have never eaten at any of the other two restaurants on property. Only lunch and drinks at The Green Door. One restaurant does offer a character breakfast, but only on Sunday.

You will never come across a friendlier group of cast members as they have time to spend with you.
We have gotten pretty chummy with Marilyn just from the two times we have stayed there. The pool area has a pool table, ping pong table a small miniature golf course, hot tub, splash area and a slide housed inside of the lighthouse. There is a bar there that also serves light items. The pool has a key access gate and so does the walkway to the beach.

Several times a week they do camp sing alongs and S'mores at the fire pit area. There is an underground walkway to the other side of the road that takes you to a recreational area. There is a pond, basketball courts, and four BQ grills located on property. They offer a kids club, catch and release fishing, spa services, a typical community hall, bike rentals, tennis and volleyball.

Disney's Vero Beach is about two hours from WDW. We enjoy spending two nights there, any more and I think we would be unhappy. Its a wonderful place to unwind. You have the best of both worlds, ocean and pool.

The building is a pic of one of the cottages.

The ocean view studio was ten points a night. What a hoot is that?

We found an amazing pizza place that delivers. It's right on the corner, either delivery or take out. I think the name of it is Orchid Island Pizza. Our first trip they couldn't endorse the place enough. Lots of amazing places to eat dinner if you exit the property and go to the left. Any where from bars to fancy places. Close enough to ride a bike, we drove!

Just to show how they go the extra mile there, on our first trip we were celebrating our anniversary and Andrew's birthday. The first day when we got back to our room, these two cards were waiting for us, with the cutest hidden mickey pins attached to the outside of the envelopes!!!!
