The Disney Exchange is Lisa, Dave, and me, the Talent, Nick

Podcast: Play in new window | Download

Another whiz-bang episode recorded early because of my schedule.

Disney's Hollywood Studios is staying the same for the forseeable future. Yay!

Dave quotes a tabloid. Fake news.

Thank you listener Allison for this week's show topic: Most anticipated new restaurant or food at Walt Disney World.

Not surprisingly a lot of our choices were located in Disney Springs. Speaking of Disney Springs...

...The Wheel of Distiny topic this week was from listener Andrew: What would you do with 5 hours at Disney Springs?

Nick's December WDW Trip Recap - Episode 158 of The Disney Exchange Podcast

The Disney Exchange is Lisa, Dave, and me, Nick, the star of this week's show. Oh, who am I kidding? The star of EVERY show.

Podcast: Play in new window | Download

This week's show is about, well, I think the title above tells it all. My wife, Barbie and I spent 12/15-12/20 at Walt Disney World, and I give a trip report, er, recap, of this too short, or too long (depending on how you feel about crowds at the parks) vacation!

Lisa eats too many cookies. Waaay too many cookies.

The Wheel of Distiny topic this week : Did you see Star Wars : The Last Jedi, and what did you think of it if you did? This is completely spoiler free, but we will be coming out with a bonus episode that will discuss the entire movie, so please look for that to come out soon!

You can reach out with show suggestions and Wheel of Distiny topics, or just comment on the show, tell me how great I am, or request a listener number on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thedisneyexchange  or Twitter: https://twitter.com/disneyexchange

Food Court at All Star Music

by Gaylin

The Intermission Food Court at All Star Music, is not as large as the food court I am used to at Pop Century. This means the selection of food is smaller as well. It still has a decent choice of entrees and desserts. I didn't have breakfast there but I did pick up yogurt and boiled eggs at the market section of the food court to add to breakfast in my room.

The food court can be accessed by doors on the exterior of the building or . . .

this large opening in the lobby of the building.

There are three booths where you can pay for your food, each booth can contain 2 cast members, on on each side of the booths.

I had lunch at the resort one day and was happy to be able to get this lovely gluten-free meal. A tasty quinoa salad, topped with a beautifully cooked piece of chicken with a side of freshly made tomato soup. For my drink, I had this bottled Odwalla juice drink, yum! I got all of this for one Quick Service credit.

I enjoyed dinner a couple of times at the food court. I had this lovely turkey dinner, sliced turkey breast, corn and mashed potatoes. Take away the gravy and the dinner roll and voila, a gluten free meal. Again, this was one Quick Service credit.

When I had lunch at the resort, it was beautiful sunny day and I sat at one of these tables and enjoyed my meal outside!

On the exterior wall of the food court is the bar, Singing Spirits. It was never very busy while I was there, I don't drink alcohol so I didn't stop, but I did take a couple photos for you. It appeared that when there was a football game on, the televisions behind the bar had the games playing, loudly . . .

Here is the drink menu, they do have non-alcoholic options but I was happy with my Odwalla drinks from the food court.

All in all, the food court at the resort was not fancy but did have enough options for everyone. I liked all the meals I had there and since I could get allergy safe meals, whew, I was very relieved!

Progressive Dining at Walt Disney World - Episode 134 of The Disney Exchange Podcast

The Disney Exchange is Lisa, Dave, and me, Nick

Podcast: Play in new window | Download

Please excuse the technical difficulties.

Thank you Georgia for being the state with the most downloads last episode.

Back on Episode 55 of the podcast we did progressive dining around Disney Springs. So much has been added since that time we decided to re-visit this location.

What, you may ask is progressive dining? We visit a different dining location for several courses, including an appetizer, soup and salad course, entree, dessert, and a beverage.

The Wheel of Distiny topic this week was submitted by listener #13, Andy: If you could take one ride, area of the park, or food from Disneyland and bring it to Walt Disney World, what would it be?

What is a Listener #? Back in the early shows we would joke about our low listener numbers, saying we had 12 whole listeners, and that included us and my wife! People started giving themselves numbers and it became a badge of honor for some!

You can request your Listener Number on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thedisneyexchange, Twitter: https://twitter.com/disneyexchange  or email us at: info@thedisneyexchange

And if you are so inclined, a 5 start review on iTunes would go a long way towards getting our show out to the masses!

We are giving away 3 Disney Exchange Podcast tee shirts! Please choose a size Large, Extra Large, or Double Extra Large.

To win simply answer the following question:

When Lisa was at Walt Disney World recently, she rode her first spinner ride ever. What was it?

Please submit your answers via email : info@thedisneyexchange.com

Where You Should Dine at Disney - Episode 123 of The Disney Exchange Podcast

Podcast: Play in new window | Download

The Disney Exchange is Lisa, Dave and me, The Music Man himself, Nick

Lisa gives a shout out to Indiana. And I sing. This song. You're Welcome.

Dave talks news, and we talk about mobile ordering coming to several Walt Disney World dining establishments. We speculate as to how it will operate. Well, Dave and I do. Lisa is too busy packing to listen to the show.

Which brings up a good point. At this moment the 3 of us are in Walt Disney World!

How do you feel about Club 33 coming to each of the Walt Disney World parks? Are YOU joining? If so, please consider dining with a "famous person"! Me!

Disney Uber. Interested?

Is friend of the show, Dave Tupper, a Muppet?

The main topic this week is 3 table service dining locations we each recommend at Walt Disney World.

Animal Kingdom Lodge Kidani and Jambo are both represented. We just so happened to have covered table service dining at AKL way back on Episode 8.

 The bread service at Sanaa

Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner at Epcot - Episode 119 of The Disney Exchange

Podcast: Play in new window | Download

The Disney Exchange is Lisa, Dave, and me, Nick

Is the recently announced live action production of Mulan going to be song free? Discuss.

There is apparently a live action Jungle Book 2 in the works. Is it possible Disney will overdo it like they did with straight to video animated sequels in the 90s.

We've been doing the show together so long, Lisa is finishing my sandwiches.

Back on Episode 109 of this very podcast we did Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner at Disney's Animal Kingdom, and this week we cover Epcot.

Me and my Princess with the A Team

Some people's appetites are larger than others. Just saying.

Ikea is coming to Jacksonville, Florida. The princesses will not be there, however. Good to know.

We discuss acceptable attire for Monsieur Paul in Epcot's France Pavilion. This is NOT appropriate, Dave!

Photo courtesy of Dave. He won't tell us if this is in fact a photo of him.

The Wheel of Distiny topic this week: Have you seen the new live action blockbuster, Beauty and the Beast, and what did you think?
We discuss our thoughts, and it is mostly spoiler free.

Signature Dining at Walt Disney World - Episode 105 of The Disney Exchange

The Disney Exchange is Lisa, Dave, and me, Nick. Hi There!

Podcast: Play in new window | Download

We start off thanking a listener for the newest 5 star review on iTunes. Those are most appreciated because they help get us out to the masses, and everyone should have the opportunity to hear my voice. And Lisa's and Dave's too, of course.

The main topic is, as the main title indicates, Signature Dining at Walt Disney World. Restaurants that have been designated Signature Dining are 2 credits on the Disney Dining Plan.

A majority of these establishments are at resorts:

Jiko at Animal Kingdom Lodge, Jambo House
Flying Fish at The Boardwalk
California Grille at The Contemporary
Citricos and Narcoossee's at The Grand Floridian

  Citricos
Artist Point at The Wilderness Lodge
Yachtsman at The Yacht and Beach Club

There are just a few at the parks:

Cinderella's Royal Table in the Magic Kingdom
Le Cellier in Epcot
Tiffins in Disney's Animal Kingdom

Tiffins

The Hollywood Brown Derby in Disney's Hollywood Studios

The Brown Derby

We also add in the dinner shows that are 2 credits on the DDP:

Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue and Mickey's Backyard BBQ at Fort Wilderness
Disney's Spirit of Aloha Dinner Show at the Polynesian.

We share our thoughts on the places we've experienced, both good and bad, as well as the restaurants or shows we'd like to visit, and if we think these venues are worth 2 credits on the Dining Plan.

The Wheel of Distiny topic :  What is your favorite Disney Detail that you have to look down to see?

Il Mulino at Walt Disney World's Swan

RM-Swan-Exterior

 By Lisa Green

RM-Il-Mulino-Menu

“Lively ambiance, attentive service, delicious Italian fare – Il Mulino in Walt Disney World’s Swan resort is a treat to delight both the appetite and the spirit.”…Me, once more channeling my inner food critic.

August, 2014:  We were 180 days from our February trip to Walt Disney World and  I wanted ADR’s (Advance Dining Reservations) at some places we’d never been before.  I’d been thinking about one particular restaurant for a long time.  Raymond and I both love Italian food and I’d heard great things about Il Mulino at the Swan – what better time to eat pasta than the night before running the Princess Half Marathon?  Checked the available times and YES!  Scored a 6:00-ish dining time.  Early? Sure – but I was going to be getting up mighty early every morning of this trip to participate in my first three runDisney events.  I wanted a place to relax and enjoy a leisurely dinner before turning in for the evening.

February 21st, 2015:  I’d run the Enchanted 10K that morning and spent the afternoon at  Disney’s Hollywood Studios – a combination guaranteed to work up a heck of an appetite!  We caught a boat from the Studios to the Swan and walked into Il Mulino right on time.  Immediately we noticed that Il Mulino was a hopping place!

RM-Il-Mulino-Dining-Room

An energetic, happy crowd filled the dining room and our table for two was right in the middle of the action next to a glass wall that separates diners from the kitchen.  We had a great vantage point for watching the dining room, the entrance, and the goings-on in the busy kitchen all at the same time!

RM-Il-Mulino-Kitchen-View

We didn’t mind the noise in this particular location, but I’d suggest asking for a table in another section of the restaurant if you’re in the mood for some quiet conversation.

Rather than a single server, we had a serving team.  Personable and professional, each person that we interacted with throughout the evening demonstrated an obvious pride in both the restaurant and the level of service provided.  The team of Tony (from Italy) and Svet (from Bulgaria) worked together flawlessly to make sure we had an outstanding experience.  Once seated, it wasn’t long before we received some bread and also a complimentary appetizer!RM-Il-Mulino-Bread

The delicious starter was courtesy of the chef who wanted us to enjoy our meal in spite of the kitchen running a little slower than usual.  Honestly, the place was great and there was such a terrific atmosphere, we probably wouldn’t have noticed the slow kitchen at all, but we did enjoy the Caprese salad very much.

 RM-Il-Mulino-Caprese

Tony was happy to help us with our wine selection – suggesting a bottle from the extensive wine list that was both delicious and in our price range.  We took our time reading over the menu before deciding on our entrees.

RM-Il-Mulino-Entree

Raymond ordered the Spaghetti al Frutti di Mare (Baby shrimp, scallops, clams, mussels, and calamari in a spicy red or garlic white wine sauce) and I opted for the Linguini alle Vongole (Linguini with red or white clam sauce) – both of us chose the red sauces for our pasta.

RM-Il-Mulino-Linguini

We were extremely happy with our choices!!!  We also ordered a plate of spinach in garlic and olive oil (pictures do not do it justice – it was delicious!)

RM-Il-Mulino-Spinach

You’d think we’d have been stuffed after all of that, but we had to try the gelato.  We love gelato!  It was the perfect dessert after such a fantastic meal.

RM-Il-Mulino-Gelato

Great food, great service, wonderful wine AND Il Mulino has…..a bucket of limoncello.  Yes, you heard me – a metal pail of lemony goodness which is ladled into a little glass that appears right in front of every adult guest when their meal is finished.  And this little, but certainly not insignificant detail was not immortalized for you by my camera.  I’ll blame the wine.  I can’t believe I failed us this way – no picture of our limoncello…which didn’t last long anyway.  I did get a picture of the bucket though!

RM-Il-Mulino-Limoncello

Carbs consumed in sufficient quantity to see me through the next morning’s 13.1 mile run, we bid goodnight to Il Mulino and the Swan.  We’ll be back, though, this dining experience shot Il Mulino straight to the top of the must-do list for our next Walt Disney World vacation.

(Note:  The Swan is located on Disney property, but is a Westin resort, not operated by Disney.)
Have you visited Il Mulino?  What was your dining experience like?

Must Do, Will Do, Never Do at Walt Disney World - Episode 98 of The Disney Exchange

The Disney Exchange is Dave, Lisa and me, Nick

Podcast: Play in new window | Download

Dave starts us off with a discussion about the surge in crowds during what has historically been a slower time of year at Walt Disney World, with, conversely, lower attendance at the parks in the Summer, likely due to the new Annual Pass tiers.

After some shout outs we launch into our main topic, sharing must do attractions, those attractions that we do occasionally, and the ones we avoid all together, or perhaps have never done at all, in each of Walt Disney World's parks.

2 Listener Polls:

We've asked lots of times, and it's back: Nemo the Musical or Festival of the Lion King?

And

Candy Corn. Yes or No?

The Wheel of Distiny topic this week has been submitted by Listener 58, Adam.
He asked for suggestions on dining for a large group, ages ranging from 5 to 69.

We cover planning for large groups more in depth on Episode 60.

As I promised, a link to this: Mickey's Backyard BBQ

Adam also suggested we talk about street performances. We covered lived shows on Episode 69, but will likely revisit this topic again in the future.

You can get your Listener Number, which enters you in our Episode 100 giveaway, and suggest show or Wheel of Distiny topics on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thedisneyexchange, Twitter: https://twitter.com/disneyexchange  or email us at: info@thedisneyexchange

And if you are so inclined, a 5 start review on iTunes would go a long way towards getting our show out to the masses!

Best 1-Credit Table Service Restaurants at Walt Disney World

RM-Be-Our-Guest-Porkchop

By Lisa Green

Once again, in the interest of full disclosure – I’m not a picky eater.  This is, you know, my blog and thus, my opinion.  I get asked a lot about the Disney Dining Plan in general and table service restaurants in particular.  Disney Dining Plans can be a great value (even if you pay for them and don’t get the free dining promotion), but to maximize your investment, you kind of need to choose wisely (if you care about such things).  There are some terrific web sites and blog posts that work out the details on where you can actually get the best value (Here’s a highly detailed great article from 2014) .  I’m not really into that per se.  I’m more about the overall dining experience versus straight up where-is-the-most-expensive-place-I-can-eat-for-one-table-service-credit.

Bearing in mind that these choices are based on my own family’s experiences – unless otherwise noted, we’ve actually eaten in every restaurant listed.  To make the list, we had to like the food, the selection, the service, and the ambiance as a whole.  Oh, and we’d have to want to eat there again.  So, if we’re all on the same page (HA!) here we go!

Disney World Dining – Best 1-Credit Table Service Restaurants
Exterior Rooftops / Animal Kingdom Lodge

Boma Dinner Buffet (Animal Kingdom Lodge) – Boma’s also available for breakfast, but we haven’t tried anything but dinner.  We’ve eaten here several times because the variety of foods on this amazing buffet is simply unbeatable.  Soups, salads, breads, meats, stews, casseroles, kid-friendly fare, unique desserts – it’s all available at Boma.  As an added bonus, arrive early or stay late and enjoy the Animal Kingdom Lodge’s gorgeous lobby and savannah overlook for animal-spotting, entertainment, and educational opportunities. (More about Animal Kingdom Lodge for an evening out here.)

RM-Sanaa-Bread

Sanaa Dinner (Animal Kingdom Lodge, Kidani Village Section) – We recently ate at Sanaa for the first time and thought the atmosphere, service, and food were all excellent.  A bit more adult-oriented than Boma (our opinion), we adored the bread service starter and felt perfectly comfortable lingering over a leisurely dinner.  Romantic? Yes!

Olivia's at Disney's Old Key West

Olivia’s Café (Old Key West Resort) – We discovered this unique restaurant mostly by accident.  We were staying at Old Key West, but honestly had no intention of eating there!  At the very end of our vacation, we found ourselves starving at supper-time with no ADR (Advance Dining Reservation) booked.  Olivia’s welcomed us with open arms.  Great service, broad selection (for all tastes and appetites), and cozy, welcoming atmosphere – Olivia’s won us over!  (Full review here.)

‘Ohana Dinner (Polynesian Village Resort) – This place has wide appeal for the entire family.  All you care to eat, great setting, tasty Brazilian-barbeque-style dinner, decent service – you won’t leave hungry!  If you’re tempted to give this place a try, you must book your ADR 180 days out.  You snooze, you lose…if you want to eat at this uber-popular restaurant.

RM-Be-Our-Guest-Sign

Be Our Guest Dinner (Magic Kingdom) – Out of pocket, I thought this was an expensive dinner (review here), but for one table-service credit?  Absolutely I’d book an ADR at Be Our Guest.  It’s gorgeous, the service is great, and the food is fine.  Best, most gorgeous dining room(s) in Magic Kingdom.  Let’s put it like this – if you must book a table service restaurant in Magic Kingdom, make it Be Our Guest where, no matter your opinion on the food or atmosphere, you can at least enjoy an adult beverage with your meal if you like. (Full review here.)

IMG_0931

Rose & Crown Restaurant (UK Pavilion, Epcot) – We loved this place.  When we ate there (once so far), we were outside on a lovely evening with a great water view.  The service and food were both great.  We love the UK pavilion – enjoying dinner there is just one more great way to immerse ourselves in its awesomeness.

50’s Prime Time Café (Disney’s Hollywood Studios) – This place is so cool!  The “props”, the atmosphere, the humorous servers, the comfort-food-based menu – it all adds up to a fun place for the whole family.  A good experience and value for one table-service credit.  I’m a notorious anti-fan of the Studio’s restaurants in general, but this place is a winner in my book.

Character Dining:

 Meeting Minnie at Chef Mickey's

Chef Mickey’s (Breakfast or Dinner Buffet / Contemporary Resort) – For years (and years!) we ate at Chef Mickey’s on every single Disney World visit.  First for dinner, then when the kids were older, for breakfast.  We’d eat there again – and probably will next time we’re all together on vacation.  The Fab Five and a decent buffet – especially during the summer, this combination at an indoor venue, for a meal, just a monorail stop from Magic Kingdom is a pretty good deal!  (Review here.)

1900 Park Fare / Drizella and Anastasia

1900 Park Fare Dinner (Buffet / Grand Floridian Resort and Spa) – We loved meeting Cinderella and her Prince, but Lady Tremaine and the Step Sisters steal the show.  What this restaurant lacks in atmosphere, it makes up for in character-meeting experiences and a good variety of tasty food.  We saw families of all ages there and our family of four adults had a great time! (Check out all the details here.)

Honorable Mentions:  Places we haven’t tried, but are on our to-try list because we’ve heard great things:
  • Kona Café (Polynesian Village Resort)
  • Whispering Canyon Café (Wilderness Lodge)
  • Cape May Café Dinner (Buffet)
  • Tusker House Dinner (Buffet)
Your turn!  Which table service restaurants would you recommend?
