Amorette's at Disney Springs

When I am in between Disney vacations, I keep up online with new restaurants, rides, stores, etc. that open when I am not there.

When this cake shop opened at Disney Springs, I didn't pay a lot of attention to it. Except to gaze at the amazingly beautiful cakes.

I thought there was no way a bakery like this would have anything gluten free. Turns out I was wrong. When Nick, Barbie and I were at Disney Springs together, we stopped at the bakery and looked at all the pretties in the cases. I asked about gluten free and voila, they have one small cake that is safe for me to eat.

Of course, I had to buy one, this little beauty. As soon as we had a chance to sit down, forks were handed out and the 3 of us gobbled this down. Yep, totally gobbled. Chocolate, chocolate, chocolate, rich, not over sweet, smooth creamy. Sigh, do you think they deliver to Canada?

Disney Sweet Things – Animal Kingdom

It is safe to say that I love chocolate, not just any chocolate, mind you – I love good, high quality chocolate. You can call me a chocolate snob, I won't mind.

I missed the opening of the Harambe Market area when I was at Walt Disney World in 2015 but I had heard of Zuri's Sweets and wasn't going to miss it this time. Especially since they had a chocolate that was calling out to me.

My first theme park visit, during this trip was to the Animal Kingdom. I admit, I zeroed in on Zuri's Sweets and had a great chat with the cast member. It was a hot day, I didn't want to carry chocolate in my backpack all day, she promised there would be lots available later in the day. (yes I know this is a bad photo of the shop but the only one I have)

What am I talking about? Dark chocolate chilli flavoured Mickey Mouse head!!! I bought 2 at the end of the day but didn't try them yet.

When I met up with Nick and Barbie later that week, I gifted a chocolate to Barbie. When we met at the Animal Kingdom the next day, it was reported to me that the chocolate was a big hit. Enough of a hit that Barbie bought another one for us to share. And she was right!

This is a good dark chocolate, nice snap when you bite it and the chilli isn't evident at first melt. Once the chocolate has really hit your palate, the heat shows up and stays. A very good treat, one I will definitely had again. In fact, I brought 3 of them home with me. Along with one of the milk chocolate Mickey heads for comparison. It has banana crisps in it.

The milk chocolate one is nothing special, no banana taste in evidence but if you like milk chocolate, go for it!

Both treats are worth one snack credit each. I do recommend the dark chocolate more than the milk but if you are not a spiced chocolate fan, the milk will do just fine! At 3 inches across, these are a good size of a treat for the price.

Favorite Foods Friday: The Croissant Donut at Epcot

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the Croissant Donut!

The original croissant donut, or Cronut, created by Chef Dominique Ansel in May of 2013, was an international sensation.

I have no idea how Disney's version, which can be found at Epcot's Refreshment Port located near the entrance of World Showcase and is just called the Croissant Donut because Cronut is trademarked by the Dominque Ansel Bakery, compares to the original, but I do know it is delicious.

Flaky, cinnamon sugary, crisp on the outside and doughy on the inside, and at $4.49, a bargain, considering that when the original Cronut was released, people were paying up to $100 for one on the black market!

The Croissant Donut is sure to bring a sugary smile to your face!

Prairie Outpost and Supply in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World

On our last trip to Walt Disney World, while walking through Frontierland in the Magic Kingdom, it occurred to me that I was in need of provisions for the evening. I stopped into Prairie Outpost and Supply expecting to find hardtack and perhaps some dry salted beef, and instead was confronted with an entirely different type of staple. Sugar!

Sugar in the form of jellybeans, lollypops, cookies, cotton candy, and various chocolate covered concoctions!

There are also "healthy options" as well, such as candy apples and chocolate covered strawberries. Fruit is healthy, right?

So, next time you're in the wilderness and need a pick me up, stop on over to the Prairie Outpost and Supply, and a friendly Cast Member will great you with open arms!

Sure You Want to Eat That?

This article is all about what you may not want to eat at Walt Disney World.  Disney fans come in many ages, and I fit into the over forty category.  Does this mean I can eat like a kid again at a Disney park? Well, maybe. Then again, maybe I shouldn't. Let me cite a few examples.

Corn Dog - The tempting traditional deep fried concoction on a stick seen in Frontierland in Magic Kingdom.  It is not recommended for one's first meal of the day. Leave this for a snack later on in the day.

Mickey Hot Pretzel - This cute creation of dough is a must-have for many when visiting. But you need to beware the heaviness of the dough as it sits in your stomach. Avoid the teacups after eating one of these. Better yet, share it with a friend. Your tummy will thank you.

Corn Dog Nuggets at Casey's Corner (Magic Kingdom) - With the added temptation of hot cheese sauce available at the fixings bar, you may not survive the evening parade. And need we mention the calories?

Turkey Leg - This one has become very popular. You see all ages of people gnawing their way through one of these giant treats. On a hot Florida day, it may not be the wisest of things to choose if you are seeking something light. 

Battered Fish Basket from Columbia Harbor House (Magic Kingdom) - It's fried. It can be greasy. And will come with fries if you don't ask for broccoli or apple slices.  Avoid if you've just had a corn dog an hour ago.

Big Top Treats at the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World

I've written about Big Top Souvenirs in the Storybook Circus section of the Magic Kingdom in the past, and talked briefly about Big Top Treats, located within the big tent. I thought we'd take a more in depth look at the snacks available there today.

You can get caramel corn, cotton candy, and Goofy Glaciers, which are essentially ices or slushies.

You can get fudge, cookies, cake pops, cupcakes, brownies, and you can even go "healthy" with chocolate covered strawberries or a caramel apple!

And you can watch many of these treats being made right before your eyes!

I bought a Mickey Candy Apple on our last trip. This is more of a meal than a snack!

 

How do you eat this ginormous treat? Well, you can ask to have it cut into pieces right there. Yes, it is sad, but sad delicious!

You can take your snack (or meal) outside to enjoy, and perhaps be lucky enough to catch a Main Street Philharmonic performance!

Gluten Free Stand at Disney's Animal Kingdom

A sign of the many good things coming to the gluten free community: a food stand called "The Gardens"  at Walt Disney World's Animal Kingdom with only wheat free options to eat and drink. I was so surprised when we walked by I did a complete double take.

Since we know so many people with food allergies, it's always good to know where to get great food and drinks! I will keep you posted any time I find cool little outposts like this one! Don't look for it's name to be highly visible on the trails right now, maybe the signage for this gem is still in production.
