Flea Market Finds: Disneyland Postcards

I picked these 3 Disneyland postcards up from one vendor recently. Usually I wouldn’t buy postcards without someone’s vacation memories written on them, but the man offered 3 postcards for $2, so I went for it. Plus they were in beautiful condition.

The first 2 are from between 1956 and 1966.

“Guests entering the Magic Kingdom are greeted  by a floral Mickey Mouse and the Santa Fe and Disneyland Depot where a scaled down model of a passenger train of another era puffs out of the station to take them on a scenic tour of Disneyland.”

Each postcard has a logo, representing the land it’s from. This one is for Main Street, USA.

The Jungle Cruise is never actually mentioned by name on this next postcard!

“Elephant Bathing Pool“

“Far from civilization, in the remote jungles of Asia, an explorer’s boat cruises past Indian elephants at play in their sacred bathing pool-one of the many thrills that await jungle travelers in the wonder world of Adventureland.

This last piece is a postcard/booklet from 1967. Adventure thru Inner Space: Presented by Monsanto opened in 1967 as part of the new Tomorrowland, and closed in 1985. The cover of the booklet is the postcard.

“A view of Monsanto Company’s attraction “Adventure Thru Inner Space” in Disneyland. Located in the newly expanded Tomorrowland, the futuristic building houses a ride through the inner space of a snowflake, in a vehicle called an “Atomobile”. The rider feels the unusual illusion of shrinking to the size of the atom.”

The first half of the book is a look at the ride.

The second half is a look at the products of Monsanto and some of “its many costumers.”

Mailed Walt Disney World Postcards

My wife bought me these Walt Disney World postcards one morning when I was too tired to get up and go to the flea market. They were $1 each, but worth the price in our opinion. We love postcards that are actually written out, telling of someone’s vacation, the weather, and how much fun they are having.

The older of the 2 cards takes us all the way back to July, 1975, taking a spin on the Tea Cups with Goofy.



Here we learn, not surprisingly, it was hot in July.



This next card is from 9/15/1983.



Again, we learn it’s hot.



I really love the fact that they describe how they went for 18 hours on 5 hours sleep.
Been there, done that!

Flea Market Finds: Walt Disney World Postcards

While I love a good Disney Postcard, my favorites are those that have been mailed. It's like looking into the past, and experiencing the parks through a strangers eyes.

Let’s start with 2 postcards featuring Cinderella Castle, mailed 20 years apart.

The caption on the card:

“Cinderella Castle-Fantasyland”

“Evening sets on Cinderella Castle, gate-way to “the happiest land of them all”… Fantasyland. High inside the castle, guests dine in royal splendor in King Stefan’s Banquet Hall.”

Wait a minute! King Stefan was Aurora’s, a.k.a. Sleeping Beauty’s, father! Of course, King Stefan’s has been Cinderella’s Royal Table since 1997, but why did it take so many years to fix this error?

One thing for sure, in 1976, when this card was sent, Bob and Fran felt that the Magic Kingdom was much more than just a Fantasyland, and that it still is today.

This next card was mailed in 1995.

“Fairy-Tale Castle”

“With its golden spires and fairy-tale turrets reaching towards the clouds, Cinderella Castle marks the entrance to Fantasyland.”

This last card features an attraction I never saw, but it was a classic.

“The Mickey Mouse Revue“

“Appearing on stage “in person”, Mickey Mouse tunes up with some of the spectacular cast of 85 famous Walt Disney characters that sing and perform during the Mickey Mouse Revue.”

David spent a whole day at the park in 1976.

All the postcards were from different sellers, and all cost $1 each.

Flea Market Finds: Mickey at Walt Disney World Postcards

I picked these postcards up at the flea market a few weeks ago. They all feature Mickey Mouse at Walt Disney World. We'll start with this fun one, with Mickey, Goofy, and Pluto in front of Cinderella Castle.

Holly was at Walt Disney World during Christmastime, 1979, and sent a postcard to her class. She was really rubbing it in when she tells them it's Monday, and she is at Disney World while the rest of her schoolmates are apparently in school! Classic.

Next up we, we have the Chief Firemouse, which, I believe, is also from 1979.

 

This person is writing Carol to tell her she is spending time with cousins, and that it's hot, but I can't make out what month it is.

The next card was never sent, and I'm not sure of the date.

Strike Up the Band! "Drum Major Mickey Mouse leads the Walt Disney World Band down Main Street U.S.A. in one of the musical group's daily performances." This leads one to believe that, at least at one point during the day, you'll see Mickey Mouse leading the band. I am not sure if this ever happened, but I'd like to see it.

And finally, we have Mickey's Collection, which is apparently pictures a collection of older cards, including the one above.

It's January 1991, and Aunt Freda is writing her family about her 2 week vacation. It's January and it's cold at Epcot Center, but at least she's having a good time.

No matter what time of year you visit Walt Disney World, it's hard NOT to have a good time!
