The 2017 Vacation That Never Was

By Shendl Rewitszky

The 2017 Vacation that never was…

I had planned and planned for this vacation and I had felt strangely unexcited about its arrival, which for me is very unusual, as I only get to WDW very rarely! I just had a feeling in the pit of my stomach that something was going to happen to affect this vacation…… and boy was I right…Enter HURRICANE IRMA!

The week before I was due to fly from South Africa to Orlando, a Hurricane named Irma made her appearance in the Atlantic Ocean on a path to Florida. I watched and watched the path all the time knowing that there was nothing I could do until I had the advisories from Disney and my airline.
I phoned Emirates twice on Thursday 7th September to find out if they were cancelling flights as by this time Irma was headed directly into Florida, they said they had not heard anything from Orlando International Airport so we accepted that we would be going. Thursday night at Midnight, I receive an email telling me that my flights have been cancelled and to call the booking office to find out more.  Early Friday Morning I phoned Emirates and they said we can definitely arrive on the 12th September instead of the 10th September as originally booked. (I still had a feeling in my stomach at this point).
We take our dogs to the kennels, arrange that the housesitter must still arrive and fly to Cape Town where my sister lives. Our first plan was to spend one night with her and then board our flight, but Irma forced all that to change. We had to spend 3 nights in Cape Town and find inexpensive things to occupy our time, All the time watching the facebook updates on Irma from the weather page I found to follow.
Sunday evening while I am packing our luggage and making sure I have everything, I get an email from Emirates, telling me that our flights have been cancelled again! At this point, I was just ready to go HOME! I could change my flights again but there was no assurance that we would get there on the 13th September, so we asked them for a refund and contacted my awesome Disney Travel Pixie to sort out our booking with Disney.

We ended up rescheduling from Sept 2017 to Nov 2018. I was not taking the chance with Hurricane season again. I am very glad that we did not go this time though….we had a family bereavement on 17th Sept and I was just so thankful that we were not overseas when it happened. That would have been dreadful and would have ruined our vacation further.
I now get to plan for a different season and I get to show my Husband the Christmas Decorations for the first time.
I guess things always work out in the end and it just shows you that they Always Happen for a Reason!

Disney E-Gift Cards

by Shendl

I learnt something new recently….Disney does E-Gift Cards!  I think this is just so convenient especially if you want to send a friend overseas a Gift and you don’t want to chance the postage system!

I really think it’s a fantastic idea and I recently got the chance to use it when I purchased my MNSSHP Tickets (Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party).  My friend Elaine, who lives in Canada, very kindly wanted to purchase our MNSSHP tickets as a gift to us (we Live in South Africa), the issue with buying them directly was that I would have to have the credit card used in the purchase  to collect our tickets at Will Call. That proved to be a little too complicated for my liking so when my friend, Julie told me about these E-Gift Cards that you can use on the Disney Store or in the Parks, I did some research and I was so excited to find that this way would work!!

I contacted Elaine and she did the purchase of the gift card from the Comfort of her own home in Canada and emailed it to me in South Africa!! The next day I was able to Purchase my MNSSHP tickets through My Disney Experience and they were then linked automatically to my Magic Band.
I haven’t had the chance to use an E-Gift Card in a Park but I am sure it will be fairly easy though. The E-Gift Card is emailed to you with a barcode so I would assume you could either use a Gift Card App on your phone or just cut out the barcode part and present that at purchase when in the parks.
Using it on the Disney Website was so easy!! I would definitely recommend it for online purchases!

Have you used a Disney E-Gift Card Before?? Let us know how you liked it?

Two and a half Days at WDW Touring Plan - Episode 128 of The Disney Exchange Podcast

The Disney Exchange is Lisa, Dave and me Nick

Podcast: Play in new window | Download

After news and rumors I share plans for our trip to Walt Disney World in December 15th-20th.

My wife and I have Gold Annual Passes, and Blockout or blackout dates apply.  I called Disney and found our these dates starts Monday, December 18th. This means we only have Friday afternoon - Sunday to visit the parks, so I ask Dave and Lisa for their advise. We bounce around different touring plans, factoring in that park hours may be shortened and that there will be various Christmas decorations and activities we will want to see.

The Wheel of Distiny :  You have a $10,000 Disney vacation budget but you CANNOT go to Disney World, whatcha gonna spend it on?

Getting to the theme park

by Gaylin

Walt Disney World has a wonderful bus system. Nothing is easier than leaving your resort and getting to the theme park.

First you wait in the line for the park you want to go to, me - I am going to the Magic Kingdom! I had slept in a bit so the only other people in the line for the bus, took my photo!

When you get off the bus, another sign to help you on the way.

And another sign . . .

This is the sign that will tell you where your resort bus is when you are leaving the park.

Entry into the park looks the same as always but you have security to go through, they were directing most people through the scanners while I was there this time. Slowed things down greatly.

The train station was being refurbished so not much of a view when you walk in.

Off to the right of the entries is locker and stroller rentals.

Welcome! Remember to pick up a park map.

The Disney Exchange Podcast : Episode 80 - Quick Service Break

By Nick

Podcast: Play in new window | Download

The Disney Exchange is Lisa, Dave and me.

I apologize in advance for my dial up internet service.

We start off discussing changes coming to the Quick Service Disney Dining Plan. They are adding a second snack per day, yet taking away desserts.

Listener pole: How do you feel about these changes?

Our main topic explores the option to leave a park and visit a resort for a quick service meal.

For example, leave the Magic Kingdom during the heat of the day and head over to the Polynesian to visit Captain Cooks.

We had intended on making this week's show much more professionally executed and researched. Apology #2.

If you have any idea as to what you can get to go at Beaches and Cream at Disney's Yacht and Beach Club, please let us know.

Wheel of Distiny topic: Favorite place to people watch at the parks.

This photo of my favorite spot at Disney’s Hollywood Studios was provided by friend Stephanie Demmler. Thank you for the photographic proof that this fountain exists Stephanie!

You can submit a Wheel suggestion or show topic idea to:

We are also asking for your etiquette questions, as we are in negotiations to bring social graces expert Miss Pixie back on to the show, so, please, if you have anything, please let us know on any of our social media pages!

The Canadian Cost of Travel to WDW

by Gaylin

A few years ago, the cost of exchanging Canadian currency for US currency was around par. This means that, as a Canadian, buying $1 US dollar would cost me $1 CDN. But not really, most currency exchange storefronts, tack 2 percent or more onto the cost of buying currency. If the dollars are at par, it is still going to cost $1.02 CDN or more to buy $1 US.

Right now the exchange rate is prohibitively high.

Yes, you are reading that correctly. 1 US dollar would cost me $1.30 cents to buy, oh wait, add on the 2-4 percent to actually buy the currency, this $1 US would cost me up to $1.34 CDN.

Some people might think, that is not so bad, I would still go on vacation. And then there is the next surprise. Booking the vacation at Disney, means paying the US price for the vacation. Credit cards exchange rates will cost anywhere from 3-7% (ouch). This obviously varies widely depending on what credit card company you deal with.

Then there is booking the flight, again, if you are booking with a US based airlines, it will be US pricing on a credit card with a high exchange charge. If you are booking with a Canadian based airline, the cost could be significantly cheaper, only problem for me, here on the West Coast, flights via US airlines are usually much better routes and travel times.

On my last trip, the cost of the flights, after exchange was $773 US (Alaska Airlines).

I went online and booked a pretend trip for the end of August, early September. One person, one week, Pop Century, 7 day park pass - no fancy options or food. The cost after credit card exchange would be about $1,922.68. Add to that the cost of the flights: $2,695 CDN. (please remember, this is with no food, souvenirs or mouse-keeping/restaurant tips)

I decided to check on the cost, adding the dining plan.

With the quick service plan, the cost after exchange would be $2,401.23 + airfare = $3,174.23 CDN.

With the table service plan, the cost after exchange would be $2,613.36 + airfare = $3,386.36 CDN. With the table service plans, there is the cost of tips as well.

What it comes down to, at the rate of exchange today, May 28, 2016. Every $1,000 US would cost me, $1,340 CDN. More or less depending on the exchange business or credit card you use.

This is why my next Walt Disney World vacation is . . .

I check the cost of exchange every day and someday soon (I hope) it will be good enough that I can justify booking a trip!
